– Fububu

Losing only a single game in the group phases, Fububu is going up against Hoodoo tonight.

First off, please tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, my name is Vu Tran “Fububu”, 20 years old, studying science at the Radboud. Playing terran as my race.

What is your history with eSports and Starcraft in particular?
Came into eSports through Teamliquid.net. Used to play Brood War, playing with only mouse and arrow keys. Now into Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.

Who’s your favourite eSports-star?
MC.

How do you like the NSSL so far?
Well organized, communication is very quick. Keeps u updated about matches and schedules very well.

How do you like your chances of making it to the finals?
Round of 4 should be minimum for me.

You’ve been pretty dominant in the group phases, did you expect them to go so well?
yupppppppp.

Are there any players you’d like to face in the knock-out phase?
Don’t really know any players except Metic.

Are there any players you’d rather not face?
Metic.

Are you bringing any fans to the finals?
Yup, cousin and brother

Why should the neutral viewer be rooting for you?
Hopefully because i showed some great games.

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to close this interview with?
Shout out to NSSL for organizing such a tournament for the students. And also my mom and dad.

– Hoodoo

He’s had a bumpy road through the group stages – will he be able to stand up against Fububu?

First off, please tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, my name is Joeri van Strien. I study Biology at the Radboud University. In my free time I play games like Diablo III/ Starcraft II. I’m also a musician. I play the drums in two different bands and a little bit of guitar.

What is your history with eSports and Starcraft in particular?
I learned of the existence of eSports from my War3 experience. I started actively following it when the beta of starcraft 2 came out. I have been playing starcraft II on and off since release.

Who’s your favourite eSports-star?
I can’t really say I have one favorite eSports star. I really like players like Ret, Hayder, Grubby and Dimaga.

How do you like the NSSL so far?
I’m loving it so far. When I learned of it I instantly signed up. I didn’t expect it to get this big however. The amount of players, sponsors and mainly webcasts baffles me. Keep up the good work!

How do you like your chances of making it to the finals?
There are a lot of strong players in the league, and lately I haven’t been as active in SCII. My opponent of tonight, Fububu will be a tough one I expect. So if I’m realistic my chances aren’t high, but that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna try my best.

You’ve been pretty dominant in the group phases, did you expect them to go so well?
Actually, my group performance was a bit of a disappointment to me. I lost matches I think I shouldn’t have, and I was 2nd in both group phases. I guess I don’t perform well under pressure.

Are there any players you’d like to face in the knock-out phase?
I entered the tournament with a group of friends. The only one left now is Recoome. I’d like to face him before either of us gets knocked out. Hopefully that will be in the finals:P

Are there any players you’d rather not face?
I don’t really know the other players personally. If I lose, I’d prefer to be knocked out by a strong player though.

Are you bringing any fans to the finals?
Yes. All of my starcraft playing friends, and hopefully some more.

Why should the neutral viewer be rooting for you?
Because zerg is awesome, and I don’t think there are many zergs in the tourney. And because I can probably use some support during my matches.

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to close this interview with?
Thanks to everyone involved with the NSSL, can’t wait for DSCL!

– Finkers

Clear sailing through the group stages – but due to some slacking group members not playing a lot of games. How will he do against Bblack tonight?

First off, please tell us a bit about yourself
Well my name is Jorick Bruins, nicknamed Finkers. My nickname is due to the fact that I am from the region of Twente, where Herman Finkers is from. He is my idol and therefore I chose the nickname Finkers. I’m a master student in Organic chemistry and expect to graduate in 2013.
I play Protoss. I’m currently in platinum league, but I used to be diamond-league before I got inactive a few months ago. So my rank is not an accurate representation of my skill at this moment.

What is your history with eSports and Starcraft in particular?
Well before SC2 I wasn’t into the eSports scene. I only played online shooters and such for fun, SC2 made me a much more fanatic eSports fan. I started watching pro matches and game-analysis videos. I increased my skill (from silver to diamond in no-time) and my interest in the scene started to grow even further. It cooled down a bit, right until I heard about the NSSL.

Who’s your favourite eSports-star?
That is hard.. I like SaSe and KiWiKaKi because their playstyles are always so innovative and fun to watch. I also like White-Ra because he’s a total baller and players like Sheth, Stephano etc because they are very nice players. And I also like Grubby/Ret because they are dutch.. raaaaah it’s hard to choose, but I think I will always root for SaSe above anyone else.

How do you like the NSSL so far?
I like it, it is a lot of fun. A lot nice people, good casting and even some prizes! But I dislike that a lot of players do not show up to matches or even reply to emails, but that cannot be helped by the NSSL. All in all, this is a really great local even with very big prizes for such a tourament. So good job on this tournament and let’s hope the national event next year will be at least just as awesome.

How do you like your chances of making it to the finals?
Depends on my opponents, I heard that one player was in the preliminairy rounds for Dreamhack. My chances against such players are slim. But as long as I’m not facing those, I should have a decent chance. I’ve made it past the first 2 group phases, which was my goal. So any other won round is another cherry on top.

You’ve been pretty dominant in the group phases, did you expect them to go so well?
Well, when I saw my oppo’s of the first group phase I was feeling pretty confident. 2x silver league and 1 unknown (he did not show up for any games). So I knew that if I played a standard game I should win both best of threes. Which I did.
In the second group I phased one of my opponents of phase 1, so I knew I had 1 win already. I assessed Olts as adequate, but beatable. That only left Hoodoo, he wasn’t out of my league. So I knew that if I threw one of those games, I should still be in O.K. Shape. After beating Hoodoo I was feeling really confident and played Olts right afterwards, He Thor-rushed me, which tilted me a bit (watch the replay, I had NO idea what I was doing). A little reset on my ego and I was back on track, winning the other 2 games with relative ease.
So all in all, I expected to win the first phase and the second was very plausible.

Are there any players you’d like to face in the knock-out phase?
Frank aka VanCaspel! I really would like to be the mean guy who knocks him out the tournament! No offense Frank! 😀
Beside that, I have not watched too many games, I will only watch the player I have to face, so I can prepare to that person!

Are there any players you’d rather not face?
One of the master-league players ofcourse, they will probably be too big a challenge. I know I have to face them sometime, but I prefer to do it in the finals so I can give the crowd a show!

Are you bringing any fans to the finals.
Yes! I have a few loyal fans who will be rooting for me and hopefully after a few Facebook-posts I get a lot of other people to watch me play!

Why should the neutral viewer be rooting for you?
As a platinum league player, I feel like I am becoming more and more of an underdog. But I started out SC2 as a silver-league player who slowly fought his way up to diamond. Due to inactivity I’m in platinum, which is below my skill level. I want to show that with enough practice and patience, you can become quite a good player.
Also, I have an awesome Twents-accent!

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to close this interview with?
I want to thank Frank for organizing this, it was really awesome. And if I get in the finals, please come and cheer for me. Be assured, I WILL put up a fun show for you guys.

eSports for life people!

– Bblack

Dropping only one match (vs. iznobest) in the group stages, Bblack also has a strong record. Will he be able to beat Finkers?

First off, please tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Boudewijn, a 24 year old nerd who has studied Clinical Psychology and is now finishing his bachelor in Physics. I’m helping to organize this awesome tourney, while in my spare time I enjoy playing squash as often as possible.

What is your history with eSports and Starcraft in particular?
Ever since 1998 I’ve been playing SC and SC Broodwar as much as possible. At the time I enjoyed all RTS games, I actually was pretty decent at Red Alert 2, but then again that had insanely overpowered units. I’ve always love the SC storyline, so I primarily played the campaign back in the days. Eventually I went on to play online multiplayer, but there I quickly got distracted by all of the awesome use map settings games (Tower defense and stuff). It wasn’t until SCII that I once more started the competitive RTS type of play, that eventually led me to this point, the RO16 of the NSSL!

Who’s your favorite eSports-star?
Well that’s easy enough, Liquid’Ret is always going to be a safe bet. He is Dutch, plays the best race of all time and comes across as a very enjoyable person 🙂

How do you like the NSSL so far?
It’s great fun, the new Battle.net interface doesn’t allow you to meet new people as easily as before, but through the NSSL I’ve been able to discover fellow nerds at my own university!

How do you fancy your chances of making it to the finals?
Not all that great really. I’ve stopped playing about half a year ago, when I over-strained my hand playing squash too much 🙁 Back then my MMR was mostly low masters, which should be ok to get pretty far in a tourney like this. But now I’ve dropped to something like mid-diamond, and I planned to not get through the second group phase. One of the games I lost was against a diamond guy, and I realised I just forgot to place down a spine in my ZvT build order. Sloppy thing like that won’t allow me to get all too far.

Did you expect to make it this far?
^^

Are there any players you’d like to face in the knock-out phase?
I forgot who the Terran was that I lost to, but I feel like when I play the way I was playing a few months ago I should have won. Even though I’m way less competent right now, the competitive drive inside
of me wants to face him and beat him.

Are there any players you’d rather not face?
Nope, it’s all good 🙂

Are you bringing any fans to the finals.
Of course I am, I’ll try to convince my friends to join the dark side for just one day 🙂

Why should the neutral vieuwer be rooting for you?
Because I’m a hardcore SC-nerd. Really, I’ve even got the books :p
